Origin and Evolution of Cracks in the Glaze Surface of a Ceramic during the Cooling Process

Because of the significant difference between thermal expansion coefficients ceramic blank and glaze, glaze typically undergoes more pronounced shrinkage than during cooling, which results in high stress concentrations cracking. In this study, mechanical mechanism cracking is studied, based on statistical strength theory, damage mechanics, continuum mechanics. Furthermore, influence layer thickness, heat transfer coefficient, temperature creation propagation inner microcracks systematically investigated, final discrete fracture network ceramics discussed at specific crack saturation state. The show that (1) a higher coefficient will lead to uniform distribution surface faster cooling process ceramics, reducing number when ambient reached; (2) thinner less prone its thickness smaller blank. However, similar blank, increased increase cracks surface; (3) not occur inside layer. as continuously rises, first then decrease.
